Statistical Decisions Model

Statistical Decisions Model

It is clear from the material in this course that descriptive and inferential statistics play a critical role in research in the behavioral and social sciences. Since you will further your education via coursework and application in your respective fields, it is important to reflect on the knowledge you have gained and its applicability to your future in your chosen profession. Utilizing all that you have learned and been exposed to in this course, write a paper or presentation providing an overview of your knowledge of basic and inferential statistics, specifically discussing how you would go about deciding upon the appropriate statistical tests to use for a study.

Include the following in your assignment:

  • Create and present a decision tree, outline, or other model that includes a series of questions to help someone decide what statistical test is appropriate for a study. Consider the number, type, and scale of measurement of the variables, as well as what you may want to know about the variables (e.g., relationship, difference, etc.). This may be presented as a chart, table, mindmap, or other visual representation, or simply formatted as an outline.
  • Explain the steps involved in the model and how you created this model for making statistical decisions. What were the easiest and most difficult parts of this process?
  • Describe two different studies of interest to you. (Note: Neither study should be one that you focused on in any of the assignments during the course.) Include the following in the description:
    • Research Question – List the research question for each study.
    • Hypotheses – List the statistical notation and written explanations for the null and alternative hypotheses for each study.
    • Variables – Identify the variables and each of their attributes: discrete or continuous, quantitative or categorical, scale of measurement (nominal, ordinal, interval, or ratio), and independent or dependent.
  • Demonstrate how you would utilize the statistical decisions model you created to choose the appropriate, specific test(s) for each study. What is your conclusion using this model? Did the model lead you to the correct test(s)? If not, how do you know and what changes might need to be made to the model?
  • Why might a statistical decisions model be useful in statistics and research methods? What are its limitations?
  • What did you learn or gain from creating this model and applying it to the study of interest? How might you use this model in the future?

The format for this presentation can take the form of a paper. The paper should be a minimum of 2100 to 2800 words long (excluding title and references pages) and include a title page, introduction, conclusion, and references page. APA formatting should be used for the paper. Utilize at least four resources for this paper, which should be cited accordingly. You can use PowerPoint, video presentation with visual aids, or other format preapproved by the instructor.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS:

1. How does the employees’ motivation affect the organization Productivity?

In this research there are two main variables that is independent variable which in this case are the motivational factors to employees which include favorable working environment, compensation strategy, business culture and the management strategy. The dependent variable in this study is the organization productivity. The best effective scale for measuring these variables is ordinal scale basically because some variables have more impacts than the others.

2. What are the factors that affect the patient’s reaction to treatment?

The variables in these case include the type of medication, the lifestyle of the patient and the degree of the effect of the health condition has affected the patient. These variables have different effect on the patient’s reaction to treatment, the variables are categorical in nature. In this case the most effective measurement scale is the ordinal scale as well (Celli, Decramer, Wedzicha, Wilson, Agustí, Criner & Vogelmeier, 2015).

3. Does increase in gun ownership affect the crime level in the society?

This question has several variables that increase in criminal related deaths, criminal activities, assault cases. A rational scale level of measurement can be used in this research because of the nature of these variables. The variables depict some categorical characteristics they have different degrees of impact to the dependent variable in the question.

4. How does the school environment affect the student performance?

The security level in the school, the type of rules and the consequences of going against the rules and the level of strictness of the teacher in the school are the main variables in the research question. The rules and regulations is can be grouped into some category as well as the level of strictness of the teachers another subordinate staff, in this case the best scale of measurement to be used is the ordinal scale. The variables also have some categorical characteristics they are not numerical.

5. What is the probability that randomly selected teenager watches movie over three time in a week?

The possibility or the variables in this case is that the student watches three times, less, or even more in a week. In this case the main scales of measurement will be internal level, this is basically because they can be quantified but the decimal or rather the zero point is not relevant to the study or rather is meaningless (Pratt, 2015).

6. Is there any relationship between the traffic congestion and the price of fuel?

The research questions in this has only one variable of interest which is the fuel prices which may or may not affect the traffic congestion. This is a question that is meant towards finding the if there is relationship between the variables in the study. The level of measurement in this case is therefore ordinal scale. The data in this case may have some continuous characteristics.

7. Is there any relationship between gender and student performance in statistics and science subjects?

The variables in this case will be the average performance of the students in the subjects of focus, they will be categorized according to their gender. These variables can actually be measured using the ratio level of measurements by some mathematical operations. In this case an average will be calculated of both genders performance on the subjects being studied. The data in this study will depict some continuous characteristics.

8. How does the training frequency affect muscle growth for body builders?

The variables in this case are time, the intensity of training and the diet. These are the three basic factors that affect muscle growth. These variables can be measured using some interval level of scale because they affect muscle growth differently in body builders. This scale will be giving some difference in categories in the manner they affect the dependent variable here which is muscle growth. The data in this case will be analyzed mathematically and so will give some discrete results (Sahin, Serdar, Serteser, Unsal & Ozpinar, 2018).

9. What is the relationship between mortality rates and poverty level?

This research question is intended to establish the existence of any relationship between the mortality rates within a population and the poverty level of that population. The variables in these case will be poverty and death rate which will be measured using the ordinal level scale because it will be giving the degree to which these variables affect each other. The variables in this case will be having some continuous characteristics because they rise and fall at some level.

10. How does technological development impact learning in schools?

This research question has two directions, that is, the dependent variable may affect the independent in two ways either positively or negatively. The variables in this case will include the teaching techniques used by the teachers, the accessibility of the learning materials and so on this will have some positive impact on the learning processes. These variables will be measured using the ordinal level scale because they will be categorized and rated on the impact they have on the subject of study.

Discussion 1: Generating Support for Evidence-Based Practices

Discussion 1: Generating Support for Evidence-Based Practices

When treating clients, social workers must ensure that the evidence-based practice is appropriate for the client and the problem. Then, the social worker must get the client and other stakeholders to support the selected evidence-based practice. To earn that support, the social worker should present the client and stakeholders with a plan for implementation and evidence of the evidence-based practice efficacy and appropriateness. Social workers must demonstrate that they have carefully considered the steps necessary to implement the evidence-based practice, identified factors in the current environment that support implementation of the evidence-based practice, and addressed those factors that may hinder the successful implementation.

For this week’s Discussion, you will take on the role of the social worker in the Levy case study. You will choose an evidence-based practice and attempt to gain the support of both the client and supervisor. To do so, you will address its efficacy, appropriateness, and factors that may impact implementation of the evidence-based practice that you chose.

To prepare for this Discussion, review Levy Episode 2 (TRANSCRIPT ATTACHED). Then using the registries provided in this week’s resources and the Walden Library, locate an evidence-based practice that you believe would be appropriate for Jake’s case. Then, review the Evidence-Based Practice kit for Family Psycho Education from the SAMHSA website from the resources. Note all the steps and considerations involved in implementing the evidence-based practice and which of these considerations apply to this case. Consider issues such as agency support, resources, and costs that might support or limit the application of the evidence-based intervention that you select.

· Post an evaluation of the evidence-based practice that you selected for Jake. Describe the practice and the evidence supporting it.

· Explain why you think this intervention is appropriate for Jake.

· Then provide an explanation for the supervisor regarding issues related to implementation.

· Identify two factors that you believe are necessary for successful implementation of the evidence-based practice and explain why.

· Then, identify two factors that you believe may hinder implementation and explain how you might mitigate these factors.

Be sure to include APA citations and references.

Discussion2 : External Factors Impacting an Organization

Last week, you explored how systems theory and the ecological perspective emphasize the interaction between a human services organization and its environment. Any change in one part of the system effects change in another part of the system. Because organizations are not immune to their environment, local, national, and global events affect them.

Social workers in administrative roles must be able to identify and analyze the external factors that affect the function of the human services organizations for which they work. Though you may apply leadership and management skills as you assume an administrative position, you may also be able to repurpose many of the assessment skills you use in clinical practice for macro social work. Just as you gather information about a client and develop strategies for treatment at a micro level, so too, at a macro level, you gather and analyze information about a situation or program and identify appropriate strategies that will support positive organizational functioning.

For this Discussion, you address the Phoenix House case study in the Social Work Case Studies: Concentration Year text.

· Post an analysis of the supervisor’s role in the Phoenix House case study and identify leadership skills that might help the supervisor resolve the issue.

· Identify which aspect of this situation would be most challenging for you if you were the supervisor.

· Finally, explain how you would use leadership skills to proceed if you were the supervisor.

The Phoenix House Case Study:

I am the senior social worker at a program called Phoenix House. Phoenix House is an after-school program supporting at-risk middle school youth. It is funded in part by local school districts. Students are generally referred to Phoenix House by school administrators or parents.

I supervise a staff of four full-time social workers and two social work interns from a local university. Staff responsibilities generally include helping students with homework, individual and group counseling, field trips, and recreational games and activities.

Students are usually referred to Phoenix House when school administrators feel that the student is on the cusp of expulsion or long-term suspension from their school, usually due to disciplinary issues. Parents of students may also enroll their children in the Phoenix House program if they feel it will be beneficial. Parents are made aware of Phoenix House and its services through PTA meetings and via school administrators when a disciplinary incident takes place. Although it is free of charge and funded primarily through school district funds, parents are discouraged from using Phoenix House as an after-school or extracurricular activity for their children.

The average clients of Phoenix House are boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 14. The clients possess a range of presenting issues, mostly relating to inappropriate behavior. Some of the clients have been involved with the juvenile justice system in some form or fashion. Almost all of the clients have been suspended from their school at one point or another. Common problems with clients at Phoenix House include fighting, bullying, stealing, and vandalizing.

The staff I supervise have quite a bit of experience working with juveniles with behavioral issues. Some of them have worked in juvenile detention facilities and others have worked at court-mandated youth programs.

We have recently accepted a new client named Daniel. Daniel is a 13-year-old, Caucasian male. Daniel was enrolled by his mother when he was suspended from his school after a marijuana cigarette was found in his book bag by school security staff. It was the first time Daniel had been suspended from his school and the first time a disciplinary report had been filed on him.

Sarah, one of the social workers, asked to speak to me concerning Daniel. Sarah had spoken to Jim, one of our social work interns, about Daniel and the appropriateness of his presence at Phoenix House. Jim is concerned that Daniel is not a “good fit” at Phoenix House because he does not seem to match up with the character and attitudes of the other clients. Sarah shares Jim’s concern and is also concerned that the other clients may be a harmful influence to Daniel.

Sarah is Daniel’s counselor, as well, and has gotten permission from Daniel to share some of his statements from their counseling sessions. The statements indicate Daniel has no idea how the marijuana cigarette got into his book bag and that Daniel suspects it was put there by another student as a joke or as a means to get rid of it during bag searches. Sarah, who has years of experience working with at-risk youth, indicates that she believes Daniel. Daniel has also gone on to state that his mother has a tendency to overreact, and this may be the reason why she enrolled him in the Phoenix Houseprogram instead of listening to his explanations.

In response to Jim and Sarah’s concerns, I contacted Daniel’s mother, Lisa. Lisa listened to my concerns but did not feel that it would be right to remove him from the Phoenix House program. She said that even if he had done nothing wrong, Daniel could learn a valuable lesson about consequences by being in the Phoenix House program. I attempted to explain to Lisa that this is not really the purpose of the program and also indicated that Phoenix House is not meant to be a typical after-school or extracurricular program. Lisa retorted that it is her right to enroll her son in the program, and in her opinion, the end result of Daniel being in the program will be positive in nature.

I have shared this conversation with the staff at our weekly meetings. The staff seem convinced that Daniel will not have a positive experience at Phoenix House and feel he is being picked on and bullied by the other clients despite their efforts to prevent it. Some staff members have also pointed out that this may be an ethical issue because they feel the situation violates the social work value of “Do no harm.”

Examine Experimental Research

One of the ways that you will likely use this information in your future career and life is to analyze and examine experimental research.
In this assignment, you will locate two journal articles that use the experimental method and are connected to the topic of your final project. The articles should not be correlational studies or review articles; you should only find articles that use the experimental method for this assignment. Also, these articles should not have been used in other assignments related to the final project. Next, you will provide a brief answer to each of the following questions for each of the articles.

1. How were the participants selected? Were the participants representative of the larger population?

2. How were the participants assigned to groups? Did the groups start out the same? Was there any bias in how the participants were assigned to groups?

3. What did the researchers do to ensure the experimental procedures were equal across the groups? If they did not ensure the procedures were equal, what should the researchers have done? Did the researchers follow APA ethical guidelines in conducting the research?

4. What were the independent and dependent variables of the experiment?

5. What was the outcome of the experiment?

6. How can you use the results of the research in your final paper?

For additional details, please refer to the Worksheet Guidelines and Rubric document in the Assignment Guidelines and Rubrics section of the course.

Discussion 1: Alternative Model of Personality Disorders

Discussion 1: Alternative Model of Personality Disorders

The DSM-5 contributors did not make any changes to the DSM-IV criteria for the personality disorders (pp. 645-684). However, the contributors added an entirely new, alternative model for personality disorders (pp. 761-781) that the APA plans to transition towards.

For this Discussion, read the case study “Working with Clients with Dual Diagnosis (attached): The Case of Cathy” and review Cathy’s DSM-IV diagnosis.

Post an update of Cathy’s diagnosis into DSM-5 and ICD-10-CM. Then analyze how the addition of the alternative model for personality disorders affects Cathy’s DSM-5 diagnosis. What behaviors and/or symptoms may be a personality trait for her, versus criteria for a required diagnosis? How might the “Other Conditions That May Be a Focus of Clinical Attention” affect Cathy’s diagnosis?

Discussion 2: Are Social Networking Sites for Narcissists?

The term “narcissist” is used commonly in society to describe someone who is self-centered or self-absorbed. However, the DSM-5 requires much more extreme behaviors for someone to be diagnosed as having narcissistic personality disorder. See the list of criteria for this diagnosis (p. 669) and also review the “Alternative DSM-5 Model for Personality Disorders” (pp. 761 to 781). Personality disorders develop throughout the lifespan. Most social networking sites are based on individuals sharing information about themselves with very few limitations. Consider if these individuals are just participating in a cultural way of relating, or are they presenting behaviors of a narcissistic personality disorder?

For this Discussion, read the Buffardi and Campbell (2008) article (attached). Then review the DSM-5 on the traditional Narcissistic Personality Disorder and the Alternative DSM-5 Model for Personality Disorders to compare the models.

Post an analysis of your view on this topic using both types of DSM-5 personality criteria. Are individuals who use social networking sites displaying traits of narcissism? Is this a developmental stage in the lifespan?

Remember, this is not a place for personal opinion; this is a forum for professional, clinical discussion. Support your argument with evidence-based information (DSM-5, research) and other professional articles that you may find. Include examples of social networking websites. Remember you are to articulate your thoughts as a professional clinician.

Support your post with specific references to the resources. Be sure to provide full APA citations for your references.

Discussion 3:
Policies and the Influence of Values

Ideology, politics, and the influence of values often override evidence-based policy. When there is evaluation conflict, a policy advocate must be prepared to defend his/her reasons for wanting to implement a policy. Because almost all proposed policies are circumscribed by politics (for reasons brought up by Jansson throughout the course when discussing the subtleties of policy implementation), you should be prepared for some conflict, ranging from having your research ignored, to having the accuracy of your data questioned, to having your personal values brought into question.

In this Discussion, you consider the assertion that the evaluation of specific policies is often strongly influenced by values. You also examine and evaluate ways to mitigate evaluation conflict to defend the feasibility of your policy.

By Day 3

Post a response to Jansson’s assertion that evaluating specific policies is strongly influenced by values with respect to the case of the evaluation of special services. How do the values of evaluation conflict adhere to social work values? What practices would you use to defend the feasibility of and effectiveness of your evidence-based policy?

Discussion 4:
Becoming a Lifelong Advocate

It is not enough to be compassionate. You must act.

—Tenzin Gyatso

As this course comes to a close, consider and reflect on how you can become a lifelong advocate for social change in your future social work practice. As a motivated policy advocate and social worker, your actions in your chosen profession will reflect your motivation to help relatively powerless, disenfranchised groups of people improve their resources, their opportunities, and their quality of life.

In this Discussion, you reflect upon your responsibility as a social worker, politically and professionally.

Post your thoughts on this question: As a social worker, what is your responsibility to engage in political action? Identify an area of social welfare where social work policy advocacy is needed.

Thesis Statement For The Integrative Literature Review

In this assignment, you will create the thesis statement for your Final Assignment. The thesis is the statement of your perspectives on the literature. It should also include the rationale and relevant empirical and theoretical background supporting your perspectives. The primary objective of this assignment is to outline specific areas of inquiry you intend to answer in the course of the Integrative Literature Review. Although they may change during the course of the review, articulating these areas of inquiry early will help provide focus and direction for your research.

Begin by introducing the areas of inquiry to be included in your Integrative Literature Review. Explain your perspective on the literature and include how you arrived at this viewpoint, how the literature you have chosen to include supports this viewpoint, and why this perspective is relevant to the field of psychology.

Based on your introduction, briefly discuss the literature you have chosen by integrating concepts developed from your four different content domains. Be sure to utilize at least one peer-reviewed source per domain. Construct clear and concise arguments using evidence-based psychological concepts and theories to support your perspectives regarding the literature.

To conclude your assignment, identify any overarching implications shown in the studies and describe how these influenced your perspectives on the literature.

WEEK 2 ETHICAL FRAMEWORKS ESSAY

Question description

WEEK 2 ETHICAL FRAMEWORKS ESSAY

WCU assignment icon Consider the “Four Topics Approach” (or Four Box method) to ethical decision making on page 61, Table 2.1 in Butts (below). Apply this model to a challenging situation in your nursing career that required you to consider the ethical dimensions of the patient case and the role you played in providing care. Specifically apply and address the questions within each topic area as they pertain to your situation.

In your conclusion, discuss the impact of the Four Topics process. Did applying these principles shape your decision making in any way? Does this seem like a valid process for you to apply in your practice?

Your paper should be 1-2 pages. Adhere to APA formatting throughout, and cite any outside sources you may use.

Review the rubric for further information on how your assignment will be graded.

Optional: You may download this pdf, complete it using correct grammar and APA, and submit it as your assignment in lieu of writing a paper. *You will need Adobe Acrobat in order to utilize this fillable .pdf form.

Language Rich Environment All children learn language in a language-rich environment.  In thinking about what you have learned about language so far, how will you design the physical space of your classroom to allow for language opportunities?  You will need to think about the type of communication and interactions that you would like to see take place throughout your classroom.

For example, you might place drawing paper and clipboards in the block area to help foster communication so that children can draw their block creations on paper and share them with other children.  Having a large open space in the block area invites cooperation so children can verbally communicate and work together on large building structures.  You also might have the block shelf labeled for children to be able to see and provide books of shapes and building for children to explore.

For this assignment, you will create a floor plan of your classroom that fosters language development. Your classroom design should have a minimum of three physical areas of the classroom detailed including an explanation of how the design supports language acquisition.  You can use web resources such as Classroom Architect or Gliffy to design your classrooms or you may use Microsoft Word to draw your design using shapes and the textbox feature.  If you choose to use Classroom Architect (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. or Gliffy (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site., you will need to download your design as a PDF file or JPG file and insert the image into a Word document before uploading your final assignment.

For each area (minimum of three) that you define in your classroom floor plan, you must include the following:Explain how the area is set upExplain how specifically the area supports language developmentDescribe the activity or experience that the children can specifically be engaged inExplain what the role of the teacher will be How you will assess the effectiveness of this area on language developmentThis assignment should be completed in a two- to three-page paper (in addition to the title page and reference page) that accompanies your visual floor plan.  Your project should be written in APA format as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center, and include at least two scholarly resources in addition to the course text.  Please remember to provide evidence from the textbook to support your design features.  You must also provide a reference citation in APA format at the bottom of your floor plan.
