Professional philosophy of advance nursing practice

Question description

This Assignment addresses this course outcome:

MN502-1: Formulate a professional nursing philosophy based upon the role and responsibilities of the advanced nurse.

Introduction

The purpose of this Assignment is for you to present your views, values, and beliefs about the four concepts of the nursing metaparadigm (i.e., person, nursing, health, and environment) and their interrelationship to one another as they guide your current nursing practice. The process of identifying a personal nursing philosophy of advanced nursing practice and continuously examining, affirming, and validating this philosophy through caring for patients, families, communities, populations, and/or systems can foster professional and personal growth that builds advanced practice expertise.

Directions

In this Assignment, you will develop the first draft of your personal philosophy of advanced practice nursing. You will continue to work on this document throughout the course, with new drafts reflecting your growing sophistication as you reflect on each week’s lesson.

A philosophical statement includes these elements:

  • An introduction that presents your thought processes used to articulate a philosophy of advanced practice nursing. Note that APA does not use a heading for the introduction, because it is assumed that the first few paragraphs of a manuscript are the introduction.
  • Valued personal concepts, such as:
    • Metaparadigm concepts such as person/client, nursing, health, and environment
    • Additional concepts you may find valuable to advanced practice, such as IOM Future of Nursing, accountability, interprofessional collaborative practice, social justice, and professionalism
    • Definition of each concept selected
    • Relationships between and among concepts within your personal philosophy as applied to your current practice. A diagram with should be used to graphically depict these interrelationships.

Organization of Your Paper

Your final paper is to be written in APA format (including organization, documentation, and references) and be no more than two pages in length. The paper should include a title page and reference list, however, these pages are not included in the final page count.

Course materials, except textbook, may be used and must be supplemented by current literature from peer-reviewed nursing journals no older than 5 years.

Additional resources to support this Assignment include:

  • Reflection: Readings
  • IOM Future of Nursing
  • Interprofessional collaborative practice

Review And Selection Of A Standardized Test Lin Assignment

Review and Selection of a Standardized Test

Resources

In Unit 1, you read “The Concerns of the Profession” on pages 66–68 of your Psychological Testing and Assessment text as well as the Code. While the Code addresses the roles of test developers and test users separately, you will be following the standards for test users and, specifically, the section on selecting tests (refer page 5). There are nine elements to consider when selecting a test. You will focus on the first four of these elements for this assignment.

In your paper:

  • Identify a test category that is relevant to your academic and professional career goals. The List of Tests by Type document identifies the 10 categories you may choose from. They include (1) intelligence/cognitive abilities, (2) achievement/aptitude, (3) personality, (4) behavior, (5) adaptive behavior, (6) neuropsychological, (7) career/business/organization, (8) autism, (9) depression, and (10) preschool.
  • Select three tests from a single category using the List of Tests by Type document. Note: If you have an interest in a particular test that is not on this list, then you may, as an option, submit a request to your instructor to include it in your first assignment with two other tests on the list in the same category.Your instructor will review it and determine if you may proceed with including that test in your assignment or recommend that you select three tests from the list.)
  • Compare and contrast these three tests according to the Code’s first four elements.
    • Access the Capella library and conduct a search. Use the Mental Measurements Yearbook (MMY) database from Buros to locate and read a review for each test. Mental Measurements Yearbook is located on the Capella Library’s Database A–Z page.
    • Visit the publishers’ Web site for each test to obtain additional information.
    • Return to the Capella library to choose a database, for example, PsycINFO, PsycARTICLES, ERIC (education research). Search for journal articles that are relevant to the four elements and each test. (See the PSY7610 Library Search Guide, linked in the Resources, for search advice. An optional worksheet is also provided to you in the resources to facilitate your research and literature review.)

Organize your paper using the following headings (please use these headings):

  1. Title page (required).
  2. Abstract (optional).
  3. Introduction.
    • Identify your particular area of specialization and career goals, and the three tests you will research and review.
  4. Element 1. “Define the purpose for testing, the content and skills to be tested, and the intended test takers” (Code, 2004, p. 5, See #1). Describe your findings for all three tests citing references. Use this section to introduce each test and report on each of the three elements: purpose, content and skills, and intended test takers.
  5. Element 2. Describe “the appropriateness of test content, skills tested, and content coverage for the intended purpose of testing” (Code, 2004, p. 5, See #2). Describe your findings for each test citing references. Use this section to report on unique comments or research that evaluate any aspects of the appropriateness of each test. There may be a wide range of facets considering appropriateness that may be unique to each particular test under consideration.
  6. Element 3. Describe “materials provided by test developers and select tests for which clear, accurate, and complete information is provided” (Code, 2004, p. 5. See #3). Describe your findings for each test, citing references. Use this section to describe either reviews or your evaluation of the materials described in the sources you locate for each test under consideration.
  7. Element 4. “Select tests through a process that includes persons with appropriate knowledge, skills, and training” (Code, 2004, p. 5. See #4). Include specific publisher information about test-user qualification (for example, Level A, B, or C; or other classification). Describe your findings for each test, citing references.
  8. Compare and contrast.
    • Compare and contrast the three tests based on these four elements (that is, 1–4).
    • Decide which test will be the focus of your course project, based on your evaluation of the three tests. Explain your choice. All future assignments will be focused only on this one test that you determine here.
  9. References (required, use current APA format and style).

You may use the Optional Research Worksheet given in the resources to complete this assignment.

Additional Requirements

Your paper should meet the following requirements:

  • References: A minimum of nine references are required for this assignment. These resources may include all of the reference sources identified in your Psychological Testing and Assessment text (pages 33–36), but must include:
    • Three Mental Measurements Yearbook test reviews from Buros (one for each test).
    • Three test publisher Web sites (one for each test).
    • Three journal articles (one for each test).
  • Length of paper: A minimum of five pages of content, not including the title page or references (an abstract is not required).
  • APA format: Current APA format and style is required throughout. Be sure to use correct format and style for each respective type of reference, for example, Web site versus journal).

Note: Your instructor may also use the APA Writing Feedback Rubric to provide additional feedback on your academic writing. The writing feedback rubric does not affect your assignment grade, but its feedback may factor into the grading criteria, if professional communication and writing is a course competency. Evaluate your own work using this rubric. Refer to the Learner Guide for instructions on viewing instructor feedback.

The articles you need to complete this assignment should be available inside the library collection. In future courses you may use the library’s Interlibrary Loan service to obtain articles outside of the collection, but you should not have to use the service for PSY7610. In the event that you can’t find articles covering a newer test edition, please refer to the List of Tests by Type in the Resources area. Note which tests have been designated as acceptable for searching prior test editions.

Biological Causes Of Crime

Assignment 1: Discussion—Biological Causes of Crime

Natalie was growing concerned about her daughter Brandi’s school performance. Her grades had dropped since the beginning of the school year, and she seemed reluctant to go to school. On some days, she complained of vague symptoms, such as stomachache or headache. On other days, she simply did not get out of bed. Natalie took her to the doctor, but there was no definitive diagnosis. She questioned Brandi about any problems at school, but Brandi was uncommonly quiet. Natalie then looked at Brandi’s Facebook page and saw a series of comments from Brandi’s friends about a school bully. When Natalie confronted Brandi, the child broke down crying and told the whole story. Another girl, who was two years ahead of her in school, was bullying her. She would tease Brandi in school, leave nasty messages on her Facebook page, and even threatened her on several occasions.

Natalie was furious and immediately arranged a meeting with the teacher and school principal. The school officials attempted to address the problem by speaking to the girl and her parents. The parents placed their daughter in treatment; she was diagnosed with a behavior disorder and put on medication, which seemed to work. Both the girl’s parents and the school officials explained to Natalie that the girl had an underlying medical condition that caused her to become angry and lack impulse control. The school officials were reluctant to suspend the girl because it was “not her fault” but rather a “biological factor” causing the behavior.

Natalie was still upset. She did not understand why her own daughter should suffer. She had a nagging suspicion that the bully’s parents were using the biological cause as an excuse for their daughter’s bad behavior.

Research the biological causes of crime and the eugenics movement using the textbook, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet.

Based on the scenario, and drawing on your readings and research, respond to the following:

  • Why do you think some people are troubled by the idea that crime has a biological cause? Support your response using an article from the popular media presenting the biological argument for criminal behavior.
  • In what way may views of biological causes of crime be related to the eugenics movement? Give reasons using a scholarly, peer-reviewed article either for or against the eugenics movement.

Write your initial response in 4–6 paragraphs. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

Weekly Discussion

Question description

Part One

if the key issue that you are researching were solved, what would be the historical, psychological, ethical, and social ramifications of this solution? How would the course of history change if this issue were resolved? How would the group psychology of the population you are studying change or how would it need to change in order to solve the problem? How would the ethical relationships within this group or surrounding this group change if this key issue were resolved? And finally, what would be the ramifications in society at large if there was a resolution to this key issue/problem? Would these be positive or negative? Both?

Note: The topic I am doing my research on is pressure ulcer on the elderly and disabled.

Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length. Support your claims with examples from required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references.

Part Two

Find the most interesting, bizarre, or blatant example of a violation of good ethical conduct in research in the social sciences. Explain the experiment. What theories, ideas, behaviors, or phenomena were being analyzed? What were the attributes of the population that the researchers chose to use for their experiments? What did they do to the population over the course of the experiments? After you have explained the experiment and its procedure, then provide an argument that displays why this research methodology was unethical. Remember to support your arguments with factual evidence and logical reasoning.

Note: Do not overlap cases with other students. Each case presented should be unique. You cannot receive full credit for a post that overlaps with another student if that student posted before you. If someone posts your desired example before you do, please find another case.

Principles of Ethics, Bioethics and Nursing Regulation

Question description

Competency 726.1.8: Principles of Ethics, Bioethics, & Nursing Regulation – The graduate demonstrates decision-making skills that reflect a professional and ethical framework and adhere to the guidelines and regulations set by professional and state regulatory bodies.

Introduction:

Nurses are confronted with ethical decisions every day, ranging from decisions about routine vaccination to issues of death and dying. It is important, therefore, that nurses know how to analyze a bioethical issue based on nursing ethical values, principles, and facts in order not only to make ethical decisions about their practice but also to help support patients and families as they struggle with ethical decisions.

Scenario:

Matt, a 20-year-old white male, was brought into the emergency department unconscious with a needle protruding from a vein in his left forearm. It was determined from his lab work that he had been taking opiates, and a heroin overdose was suspected. After Matt was intubated and placed on mechanical ventilation, he was stabilized and transferred to the intensive care unit. Matt’s family was notified, and they rushed to his bedside within a half hour. After speaking with the physician, the family told the healthcare team that they wanted to do everything possible to save their son’s life.

An hour later, Matt’s heart stopped, and after a full code, Matt was stabilized but was still not breathing on his own. Matt’s heart stopped two more times over a span of three hours. Dark blood was becoming visible in the suctioning canister, but Matt remained in a full code status, and the family refused to assign him a “Do Not Resuscitate” (DNR) status after five codes.

Currently, the physician does not want the patient to have any further resuscitation. EEG shows no brain activity. The nurse is torn between supporting the family and following through with the physician’s desires. The nurse manager informs the nurse that she should do as the physician says. The nurse also dislikes caring for drug abuse patients. The patient did not have a DNR order on file. If he had a DNR, there would have been an agency policy to follow it. The hospital also has an ethics committee.

Task:

A. Analyze (suggested length of 1–2 pages) the bioethical issues found within the scenario.

1. Provide relevant facts that relate to the issues.

2. Discuss how the nurse and the family members have ownership in the given scenario.

3. Discuss how the ethical principles of autonomy, beneficence, and non-maleficence relate to the given scenario.

B. Analyze (suggested length of 1–2 pagestwo bioethical issues in the given scenario in terms of a specific ethical theory of your choice.

1. (principle-, relationship-, or consequence-based).

2. Explain how the chosen theory can relate to the given scenario.

3. Discuss a state law or nursing statute that can be applied to the scenario.

C. Discuss (suggested length of 1–2 pagestwo alternative actions that could affect the patient outcome.

1. Apply the ANA Nursing Code of Ethics to guide these actions.

D. Acknowledge sources, using in-text citations and references, for content that is quoted, paraphrased, or summarized.

Note: When bulleted points are present in the task prompt, the level of detail or support called for in the rubric refers to those bulleted points.

Note: For definitions of terms commonly used in the rubric, see the Rubric Terms web link included in the Evaluation Procedures section.

Note: No more than a combined total of 30% of a submission can be directly quoted or closely paraphrased from sources, even if cited correctly.
