Describe a problem of interest to you, personally, or that you are likely to encounter, professionally.

Topic Statement

In the final week of this course, you will design an intervention to address a specific problem you have identified utilizing social psychological insight. To ensure proper preparation for this cumulative work and to provide you with an opportunity for initial feedback, this week you will identify and describe a problem using relevant theory and research.  Note that the purpose of this assignment is formative.  At this point, you are not expected to have a perfectly firm grasp on the material or a detailed plan for addressing a particular problem, but you should be progressing in a clear direction with regard to relevant background information and resources.  Your topic statement should encompass the following:

  • Describe a problem of interest to you, personally, or that you are likely to encounter, professionally.
  • Relate the behaviors that contribute to and result from this social issue.
  • Discriminate relevant theoretical perspectives from social psychology.
  • Generate potential intervention strategies.

Synthesize the information you have acquired from your review of the literature, guided by the above points.

Conclude with a paragraph that includes questions you have, additional directions you plan to explore through your research, initial thoughts about the final paper, and any problems you are experiencing or think you might encounter.

Outline and Annotated Bibliography

In the final week of this course, you will design an intervention to address a specific problem you have identified utilizing social psychological insight. In Week 2, you began this process by crafting a topic statement.  This week, you will continue to develop your thoughts by organizing them in the form of an outline, including an annotated bibliography that summarizes your research thus far.  (For additional guidance, review the resources for Outlining (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. and creating an Annotated Bibliography (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site., available through the Ashford Writing Center.).  Note that the purpose of this assignment, like the previous, is formative in nature.  This is your chance to gain valuable feedback on the work you have completed thus far, as well as guidance as you move forward.  To take full advantage of this opportunity, be sure you submit a substantive product.  Your outline and annotated bibliography should encompass the following:

  • Describe social behavior.
  • Evaluate a problem.
  • Explain relevant social psychological theory.

The Social World: Presentation

Thus far, we have considered the major themes of social psychology: social thinking, social relations, and social influence.  In this interactive assignment, we will integrate knowledge from all three areas to provide a comprehensive analysis of a social movement, issue, event, or idea.

To inform your thinking on this topic, begin by reading “The Self System in Reciprocal Determinism” (Bandura, 1978) and “Social Action” (Synder & Omoto, 2007), and peruse The Stanford SPARQ Solutions Catalog (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site..  In addition, review “Ten Simple Rules for Making Good Oral Presentations” (Bourne, 2007) and “Ten Simple Rules for a Good Poster Presentation” (Erren & Bourne, 2007).

Then, identify a current or historical social movement (e.g., the Tea Party, Black Lives Matter, the Reformation, etc.), issue (e.g., gay marriage, school choice, abortion, slavery, etc.), event (e.g., the 2016 Presidential election, the Rwandan genocide, the Bubonic Plague, etc.), or idea (e.g., democracy, the nuclear family, peace, etc.).  Create a multimedia presentation (e.g., a video, poster, etc.) that depicts the selected topic in enough detail that classmates, even with no prior knowledge, will gain a basic understanding.  (For additional guidance, review a guide for creating Presentations (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site., available through the Ashford Writing Center.).  Your presentation should apply psychological insight from at least two of the three areas covered thus far in the course (social thinking, social relations, and/or social influence) to analyze relevant social factors.  In your presentation, interpret social psychological theory and research, including the concept of reciprocal determinism in relation to this social movement, issue, event, or idea.  Describe research methods used to investigate relevant phenomena and summarize actual or hypothetical applications of social psychological insight.   Employ knowledge from social psychology to identify specific careers or disciplines that might be especially well suited to addressing the underlying issues in your example.  Be sure to maintain an objective stance.  (In other words, if you select a social issue, avoid sharing your opinion regarding the “right” or “wrong” view.  Your classmates should not be able to determine your personal views based on what you post.).

You must include a both a multimedia component (e.g., link to or embedded PowerPoint, screencastPreview the document, video recordingPreview the document, etc.) and a transcript or other written component that fully explains the audio or visual elements. Please utilize APA style to format your transcript or other written component. Upload the completed assignment (including both the multimedia component and the written component) into Waypoint.  Next week, you will share your presentation with your classmates in a discussion forum.

Utilize a minimum of five credible scholarly sources to inform your thinking on the topic, in addition to required course resources as applicable.  Additional credible references are encouraged.

Note to Students: This assignment requires that you produce a visual presentation, supply a spoken audio narrative, and to listen the audio narrative of others.  Note you are also asked to provide a transcript of your presentation.  If you have a documented disability accommodation that might interfere with your ability to complete this assignment, you may contact your instructor to develop a comparable alternative assignment.  If you have other issues that you feel may be a barrier to your ability to complete this course or this assignment please contact the Office of Access and Wellness at: access@ashford.edu.

Final Paper

Prior to completing the summative assignment, consider the various topics studied by social psychologists:

  • Social thinking (attitudes, the self, judgment and decision making, etc.),
  • Social relations (attraction, aggression, prosocial behavior, etc.)
  • Social influence (conformity and obedience, persuasion, group processes, etc.)

Consider also your own interests and career aspirations and identify a problem of interest or relevance to you and amenable to a social psychological solution.  (For example, those interested in healthcare might consider programs that aspire to get kids moving or help adults stop smoking, enhance caregiving practices amongst the elderly, or encourage safe or healthy habits.).  For ideas—and/or to increase awareness of the broad range of applicability of social psychological insight—browse the solutions catalog available via Stanford SPARQ  at https://sparq.stanford.edu/solutions (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.; you may also contact your instructor for specific suggestions.  Next, evaluate contributing social factors in light of theoretical principles and design an ethical, feasible intervention program.  (Refer to “Writing a Review Article for Psychological Bulletin” (Bem, 2016) for advice regarding academic writing of this nature.  In addition, review the guide for Graduate Writing (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site., available through the Ashford Writing Center, including information on Writing a Literature Review (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site..).

Your final paper should encompass the following:

  • Assess social behavior, including factors that influence social behavior as well as the role behavior plays in producing and perpetuating social issues and problems.
  • Describe a resulting social problem in the context of social psychological theory and research.
  • Interpret relevant theoretical perspectives derived from social psychology.
  • Distinguish scientific methods for studying this specific social problem.
  • Develop an original intervention strategy based on social psychological theory, research, and your evaluation of this specific social problem.
  • Suggest, propose, or assess career paths to which this insight may be applicable.
